Cake decorating @ Jenius social

Last week I was invited to the third birthday of Jenius social and as with any birthday I was expecting to eat cake, the only catch was we had to decorate the cakes ourselves before we got to eat them!

Upon arrival I was greeted by lots of friendly faces including the founder Jennifer who set up Jenius social because of her love of food and socialising. We waited for everyone’s arrival with a glass of prosecco and a selection of hors d’oeuvres before getting down to business.

We donned our aprons and washed our hands before entering the kitchen area filled with sweet delights. Split into three teams, we had the task of decorating a three tiered cake with the help and direction of two profession chefs led by Andrew Clements who was an original graduate of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant.

Each team had a different themed cake. There was the naked cake that was covered in buttercream and decoration of the teams choice, a chocolate ganache with fruit and delicately shaped chocolate shavings and my team who used fondant icing.

DSC_1059The last time I remember decorating a cake was when I made a chocolate hedgehog for my home economics GCSE! When I made cakes with the kids growing up I usually let them unleash their creativity and left them to it, I had forgotten just how messy the whole process is.

I was in a team with Marjan and Adil and neither of us really had a clue what we were doing so we just followed the guidance of the chefs to place the icing and then winged it with the decoration. I think the cake turned out pretty good considering!

There certainly was some talent among us and all of the cakes turned out looking delicious. Andrew had the task of choosing a winner before we got to tuck in.

And the winner is…

Lets face it the chocolate cake was never gonna lose and it tasted as good as it looked!

As you’ve probably worked out Jenius social, which is based in Islington, is a hub for cookery but they offer a whole host of events including

  • Hands on cookery classes
  • Private dining and bespoke parties
  • Hen parties
  • Corporate team building
  • Kitchen hire
  • A canvas for workshops, photography and filming

It was a pleasure to celebrate with Jenius social for their birthday and I was eating cake for the next two days!
How are your cake decorating skills?

  2. How fab are those cakes my daughter would love to something like this we live up north though so will have to look if anything local #KCACOLS

  3. I would so love this – my presentation skills are extremely pathetic but I feel like I just need to be shown and guided a bit. Your creations looked amazing! #kcacols

    1. I was a bit nervous about piping, I have all the equipment at home but never tried it out before. It’s good to get a pro to show you how to use it or you could always just practice and learn from your mistakes 😉
